The free temporary use of an apartment allows us to add a new accommodation for patients and families

Last May, we once again held a press breakfast to highlight the situation faced by organisations that provide accommodation for patients and caregivers who need to travel to Barcelona to receive medical treatment. Although several organisations have made significant efforts over the past year to expand their accommodation networks, demand continues to grow steadily. As a result, there are still families who are unable to access this essential resource at a time of particular vulnerability.

The media coverage generated by the event had a very positive impact. Following the publication of the story, a person contacted the Foundation wishing to contribute to our mission and offered us the temporary use of their home, free of charge, for one year. This act of solidarity will allow us to respond, albeit temporarily, to part of the current demand and add a new property to our “A home away from home” programme.

The apartment is located in Barcelona’s Sant Andreu neighbourhood and is strategically situated, with excellent transport links to both Vall d’Hebron University Hospital and ICO Badalona, two key healthcare centres for many of the families we support. This proximity will make travel easier for patients and their caregivers, reducing the time and costs associated with daily journeys during treatment.

During August, we began some minor refurbishment and redecoration work to adapt the apartment to the needs of the families who will stay there. The aim is for it to become available by the end of September, providing a welcoming, comfortable and suitable environment for people going through particularly challenging circumstances.

This new resource represents much more than a place to stay: it is a reflection of the solidarity of our community and another step forward in our commitment to supporting families throughout the treatment process, helping to reduce the difficulties they face when they have to travel far from home for medical reasons.
