More than 1,700 people take part in a new edition of Unstoppables Day

The Josep Carreras Leukaemia Foundation has celebrated the 15th edition of Unstoppables Day, bringing together more than 1,700 patients, family members, donors and supporters across Spain under the slogan “Let’s paint the streets orange”, the colour symbolising the fight against leukaemia.

The main event took place on 13 June at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, where nearly 200 people attended in person. The gathering marked the official launch of the European Leukaemia Week, held every year from 21 to 28 June. More than 1,500 additional participants joined remotely or through solidarity initiatives organised across the country.

During the event, patients and Foundation representatives shared their experiences and highlighted the organisation’s key areas of work: the search for bone marrow donors through the Spanish Bone Marrow Donor Registry (REDMO), the promotion of scientific research through the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute, patient and family support programmes, and the provision of accommodation apartments for patients who must travel far from home to receive treatment.

The event also showcased some of the Foundation’s most recent achievements. Today, the organisation is supported by a community of more than 160,000 members, has registered over 529,000 bone marrow donors through REDMO, has coordinated more than 16,000 bone marrow transplants, and continues to promote new research projects and clinical trials aimed at improving treatment options for patients.

In addition, 272 solidarity initiatives were organised by patients, families, schools, associations and companies throughout Spain, further consolidating Unstoppables Day as the Foundation’s largest community mobilisation event.

As a symbol of support for the cause, Bilbao illuminated the Arriaga Theatre and several iconic city fountains in orange. During European Leukaemia Week, more than 50 landmark buildings and monuments across Spain will also be lit up in orange to raise awareness of leukaemia and other blood cancers.

Through initiatives such as Unstoppables Day, the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Foundation reaffirms its commitment to research, bone marrow donation and comprehensive patient support, moving closer to its ultimate goal: making leukaemia a 100% curable disease.
