More than 14,000 new bone marrow donors join REDMO in the first half of 2026

The Spanish Bone Marrow Donor Registry (REDMO), managed by the Josep Carreras International Foundation, closed the first half of 2026 with 14,214 new registered donors, a figure 9% above the target set for this period. With these new registrations, Spain now has 530,195 bone marrow donors.

These positive results indicate that the annual target of 26,000 new registrations, established jointly with the Spanish National Transplant Organization (ONT), is expected to be exceeded. In addition, Catalonia, the Community of Madrid and Andalusia account for around 55% of all new donors registered during the first six months of the year.

Beyond the growth of the registry, however, the most important figures are those representing patients who have been given a new opportunity. During the first half of the year, REDMO’s activity helped make 579 transplants possible: 443 in Spain and 136 for patients in other countries. The number of transplants carried out in Spain also represents an 11% increase compared with the same period in 2025, which had already been a record year.

These results highlight the importance of continuing to recruit young donors from diverse backgrounds and maintaining the commitment of all the institutions and organizations that make up the donation network. Behind every new registration lies the possibility that, one day, a match will be found that can offer a second chance at life to a patient in need of a transplant.
