On May 26, the Teatre-Auditori Emma Vilarasau in Sant Cugat del Vallès (Barcelona) hosted the participatory charity concert “With Opera in the Heart”, an initiative organized by Apròpera that brought together more than 150 artists on stage for an evening defined by music, solidarity, and community participation. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Foundation.
The concert featured a distinguished lineup of soloists, including Sant Cugat natives Laura Brasó and Marc Sala, alongside Olga Syniakova, Antoni Lliteres, and Jeroboám Tejera, under the musical direction of Maestro Miquel Ortega. Several choral ensembles also took part in the performance, including the Cor Infantil Sant Cugat, whose participation brought a particularly moving and heartfelt dimension to the evening.

One of the most memorable moments of the evening came at the end of the concert, when tenor Josep Carreras took to the stage to perform “Va, pensiero” from Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Nabucco. Sharing this iconic piece with the participating artists and the audience, Carreras brought a truly special close to an event that beautifully combined artistic excellence with social commitment.
In addition, the event marked the official introduction of tenor Josep Carreras as the first member of Apròpera’s newly established Honorary Committee, a distinction that added a particularly symbolic dimension to an evening devoted to music, participation, and solidarity.
The initiative once again highlighted the power of culture to create social impact and bring communities together around a meaningful cause. Thanks to the commitment of the artists, choirs, partner institutions, and audience members, the concert became a celebration of music in support of the fight against leukaemia and other malignant blood disorders.
From the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Foundation, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Apròpera, the Sant Cugat del Vallès City Council, all the participating artists, and everyone who attended the concert or contributed through the charity donation row. Their support helps us continue advancing research projects, the Spanish Bone Marrow Donor Registry (REDMO), and our patient and family support programmes, bringing us one step closer every day to our goal: making leukaemia a 100% curable disease one day.
