Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in adults is a rare and aggressive disease. Only 15% of acute leukaemias are classified as lymphoblastic. Dr. Josep Maria Ribera is an eminence in this field, one of the largest international experts and he dedicates 100% of his time to research in this area. Dr. Ribera is part of the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute.

One of the research projects into acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), a project being carried out by Dr. Josep Maria Ribera from the Catalan Institute for Oncology/Germans Trias i Pujol Campus, has been awarded a €34,220 grant by the biopharmaceutical company Gilead Espanya.

The aim of the project, entitled “Next Generation Sequencing versus high sensitivity flow cytometry for the detection of residual disease in childhood and adult acute lymphoblastic leukaemia” is to establish whether a new genetic technique will make it possible to more precisely determine the amount of leukaemia remaining in the organism after initial treatment. This would help in assessing and applying any further treatment such as chemotherapy or the transplant of hematopoietic precursors.
