The Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute joins the Health Universitat de Barcelona Campus (HUB)
On 20 May our research institute; the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC) joined the Health Universitat de Barcelona Campus (HUBc); a campus of international excellence promoted by the University of Barcelona to coordinate the interaction between leading hospitals and research institutes in the field of health. The HUBc was created in 2010 as an environment in which to promote excellence and share knowledge, but also to promote knowledge transfer between institutions (hospitals, university and research centres) and to society in general.
The HUB is a dynamic environment in which the different partners compliment each other to boost knowledge and development. It includes the Ministry of Health of the Generalitat of Catalonia, the Universities and Research Commission, also of the Catalan Government, top health care centres, the city councils of Barcelona and Hospitalet de Llobregat and the Sant Joan de Déu Foundation, the Bellvitge Institute of Biomedical Research (IDIBELL) and the Augustí Pí i Sunyer Institute of Biomedical Research (IDIBAPS) amongst others.
The Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC)
The Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC) is a new concept in biomedical research centres financed by a combination of private and public funds. It was also founded in 2010 and is financed by the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Foundation and the Generalitat, the autonomous government of Catalonia. The IJC is a member of the CERCA group of public research institutes that make up a large part of the biomedical cluster in the metropolitan area of Barcelona.
The mission of the IJC is to carry out basic, epidemiological, translational and clinical research into leukaemia and other malignant blood diseases. Its vision is that it will carry out research that enables us to identify new therapeutic targets in order to develop more precise and less aggressive treatments. The aim is to understand the origin of all types of leukaemia and haematological diseases and in order to prevent them completely. The researchers of the institute will work towards a future in which all types of leukaemia are 100% curable.
The institute has three campuses: the Campus Clinic-UB, the Campus ICO-GTIP in Badalona and the Campus Sant Pau. The three campuses allow staff to be in contact with the haematology departments of three prestigious university hospitals and the many patients that are seen in them each year.
