Prof. Ciril Rozman

The Catholic University of Valencia ‘San Vicente Mártir’ has awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Prof. Ciril Rozman, who is considered to be one of the leading international authorities in the field of medicine and specifically, haematology. The title will be presented personally in April.

Prof. Ciril Rozman was born in Ljubijana (Slovenia) in 1929. He is one of the most important figures in Internal Medicine in Spain, with his own comprehensive vision of what this field involves. His specialisation is centred around haematology research. His academic training was carried out under the direction of the Catalan doctors A. Pedro Pons and Ferreras Valentí. In 1965, he obtained the chair of medical pathology at the University of Salamanca which he has held until 1969, when he succeeded one of his great professors at the University of Barcelona.
He was the director of the Farreras Valentí Haematology School until his retirement and head of the Medical division at Hospital Clínic and head of the Internal Medical department in the Medical Faculty at the University of Barcelona. In the field of Haematology he is considered to be one of the leading experts in the world in Chronic Lymphoid Leukaemia (CLL), being the first Spanish author to be commissioned by the prestigious magazine, The New England Journal of Medicine, to carry out a review of the disease. In addition, Prof. Ciril Rozman is the Vice-president of the José Carreras Foundation against Leukaemia and directs the International Medical Council.

His career has been dedicated to the search for prognostic factors and to the morphological and biological studies of haematological malignancies. More recently he has orchestrated the establishment of the first umbilical cord blood stem cell bank in Spain.

Prof. Rozman is an active member of the international councils which are closely related to the field of bone marrow transplants and his scientific activity is reflected in over 820 articles, more than 350 in international journals, and 96 book contributions.
He controls the Spanish text of Internal Medicine (Farreras-Rozman) with large circulation in Spanish speaking countries and he is the editor in chief of the Medicina Clínica journal. Among other honours and distinctions that he has be awarded are the Cross of Sant Jordi; the Narcís Monturiol medal; the Catalan government’s Josep Trueta medal; the King Jaume I award; Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia for science and Doctor Honoris Causa by the The Universities of Granada and Salamanca.
