The Department of Health has launched a National bone marrow donation Plan to achieve 200,000 donors in the next 4 years.

21st of November 2012. The Department of Health has announced in a press conference, the launching of the National Plan on bone marrow donation, led by the ONT, which aims to double the number of bone marrow donors in the next four years, reaching 200,000.

Only 1 in every 4 patients who need a bone marrow transplant has a compatible donor in their family. In all other cases, the Spanish Bone Marrow Donor Registry (REDMO) managed by the José Carreras Foundation, initiates a worldwide search for a compatible unrelated bone marrow, peripheral blood or umbilical cord blood unit donor.

Currently, there are over 20 million bone marrow donors in the world and over 500,000 umbilical cord blood units stored, respectively 100,000 marrow donors and nearly 60,000 umbilical cord blood units are Spanish.
