The palace of the Generalitat of Catalonia welcomed the signing of an Intentions Agreement for the creation of an International Research Institute related to the José Carreras Foundation. The president of the Generalitat, José Montilla, and tenor José Carreras took this first step to materialize this ambitious and innovative project.

The Institute will be the first centre in Spain and one of the few in the world focused exclusively in fostering research on malignant hemopathies…

What will the José Carreras International Research Institute against Leukaemia be like?

The project materializes in two Campuses: the Campus Clínic, located in three buildings: Hospital Clínic, the Faculty of Medicine in the University of Barcelona and the CIBEK research centre; and the Campus Germans Trias i Pujol, located in the surroundings of Hospital Universitario Germans Trias i Pujol (Badalona), the Faculty of Medicine in the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and other research centres. In this campus, the José Carreras Leukaemia Foundation will construct a new 4,000 m2 building and will provide the latest necessary equipment to both research campuses. This contribution has been esteemed at 9 million euro. Both campuses will have a coordinated task.

The Generalitat of Catalonia agrees, on its part, to a sufficient annual contribution that will guarantee the performance of the new José Carreras International Research Institute against Leukaemia. Once it reaches the total of 8-10 research teams, the Institute will boast 100 collaborators, including research and assistant personnel, and it will have an annual budget of 5 million euro, combining the funds from the Generalitat and those obtained through scholarships, grants and sponsorships.

In order to establish the Campus Germans Trias I Pujol, Badalona’s City Hall will hand over a plot of land adjacent to the Hospital, where different research centres promoted by Generalitat and linked to the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona already work. The first contributions from civil society have been given by the Rotary Club in Badalona and the Foundation Badalona against Cancer.

Other than its own campuses, the Institute will establish collaboration agreements with other research centres, both national and international. The scientific direction of the José Carreras International Research Institute against Leukaemia will be summoned internationally in order to attract the most renowned researchers in the hematology field.

Three great forces combine to make this project possible:

1. José Carreras, his family and the Foundation that carries his name’s will to continue the fight they started more than 20 years ago with the goal of eradicating leukaemia.

2. The excellent scientific level already existing in Spain, and more precisely in the hematology field, and the support to the Foundation and the project of prestigious scientists.

3. The Generalitat’s will to consolidate Catalonia as a pioneer space in biotechnology and biomedicine through this new project.

What’s the José Carreras International Research Institute against Leukaemia’s goal?

This project is born from the will to delve deeper into the mechanisms though which leukaemia and other hematologic cancers develop, with the goal of generating more precise diagnostic and treatment protocols. These mechanisms have to be directed more precisely towards resolving or avoiding the damage caused by the growth and proliferation of malignant cells through the identification of new therapeutic targets and the application of new treatments.
