►Four young women researchers will talk about their research at 6th course in primary school or 1st ESO to bring the science research world closer to kids and offer relevant female roles in the science and technology field.
One more year, and it’s six in a row, February 11th celebrates the International Day of Woman and Girl in Science. Current statistics fully justify the existence of such a celebration since, globally, only 30% of girls pursue science careers in science, technology, engineering or maths (STEM) and, once in academia, women represent only 30% of the researchers.
Since 2019, the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRi) and the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) organise 100tífiques, an initiative to raise awareness on female roles in science and to help break gender stereotypes, found too often among very young students, that associate the image of a scientist to manhood.
In 100tífiques 2021’s program, over 450 female researchers from all areas of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) will bring their research to primary and secondary schools, to offer female science roles and inspire the kids, especially girls, to opt for science careers after graduation. Among the researchers, there are four from the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute:
Laura Belver, Leukaemia and Immuno-oncology group leader, will address to 6th graders at Espronceda school, in Sabadell; Irene Fernández, from the Chromatin Biology lab, will have a chat with the 1st ESO class at IES Carles Vallbona, Granollers; Verónica Rodilla, Cancer Heterogeneity and Hierarchy group leader, will attend the 6th grade class at Arabell school, Lleida and, finally, Berta Vázquez, postdoctoral researcher at Chromatin Biology group will meet the 6th grade class at Arrels school in Mollerussa.
According to the event’s programme, researcher’s interventions will last one hour, from 11am to 12pm on Thursday February 11th, and will be preceded by a video introduction by InfoK journalist Laia Servera and industrial engineer Jennifer Smith, winner of the second edition of the science stand-up contest El Club de la Ciència (FCRi).
