Spanish Bone Marrow Donors Registry (REDMO)

Our information

During the 31 years of REDMO’s existence, more than 13,000 patients around the world have benefited from a donation or transplant coordinated by REDMO. Of these, more than 8,700 patients are Spanish.

1 in every 843 males registered with REDMO becomes an effective donor. This makes the probability of the donor being male more than 3 times greater than that of women. This is why we encourage all males to sign up to our registry.

More than 50% of our donations cross borders. Our donors save lives around the world, including countries as far away as South Africa, New Zealand or Argentina.

8 in every 10 donors make their donation via apheresis.

Spain is the third country in the world in terms of units of umbilical cord. Every year, our registry sends more than 100 units around the world for transplant.

In 2022, REDMO coordinated 422 effective donations from donors and units of umbilical cord. This makes us the 4th registry in Europe and 9th globally in terms of supply of donations.

Carla

Bone marrow donor.

“She had been registered as a bone marrow donor for 6 years when REDMO called me. One day when I went to donate blood, they explained to me that I could also register as a donor. And I was encouraged. The day of the donation was quiet, but at the same time very exciting. I kept thinking: I hope everything works well and my donation can be useful for the patient. I would say thank you to him or her. This has also been a gift for me. Even though I may not meet the recipient of my donation, at the end we will be connected forever.”

The average time required to find a donor for our patients is 27 days. We find a donor in less than one month for 6 in every 10 REDMO patients.

We find an average of 2 donors for each patient.

Almost 3 in every 10 donors located for our patients are REDMO donors. Germany is the main provider of donors for our patients and our aim is for more and more patients to benefit from donations provided by our donors.

During 2022, 568 patients received a hematopoietic stem cell transplant, of which 85 were pediatric.

In REDMO’s 31 years, more than 12,500 patients around the world have benefited from a donation or transplant coordinated by REDMO. Of these patients, more than 8,700 are Spanish.

Lucas, 38 years old

Hodgkin's lymphoma.

“In June 2019 I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and everything in my life began to change, work, projects, trips and a long etcetera were paused. Priorities also changed. Hospitals were at the top of the list, tests, chemo, and everything else took a backseat. When I was diagnosed, they told me all going to be a matter of 6 months of treatments, a little recovery from chemo, and I will be ready to go back into the world because Hodgkin’s lymphoma is one of the most curable blood cancers.

But my plans went awry since they detected an early relapse. After an autologous bone marrow transplant, I relapsed again and, finally, in 2021, I underwent a transplant from an unrelated donor located by the Foundation’s REDMO program. Wherever you are, THANK YOU to my donor and to all those who are registered in REDMO, I hug you with my soul, but, above all, full of LIFE thanks to my donor.”
