Hello, we are Lucía and Diego, a couple and we are both bone marrow donors.
It might all seem very normal, but not only are we registered as donors, but we have both been able to give LIFE, both of us, separately.
Diego is 36 and I am 38. We met and started dating 17 years ago. He was a blood donor and I was an organ donor. Thanks to his example, I decided to become a blood donor as well. In 2017, waiting for my turn to donate blood, I saw a leaflet about bone marrow donation.
We discussed the matter at home and decided to register as donors. In August of that same year, I received a call from ADOS (Adolfo, a lovely man with a friendly and kind voice) to tell me that I had to go to a hospital to have a blood sample taken so they could confirm my compatibility with a potential patient.
In November, Cecilia from the Josep Carreras Foundation called me to confirm my compatibility. I donated by apheresis. It is a day I will never forget. Diego was by my side at all times.
After the donation, I had my check-ups done to make sure everything was OK. Shortly after the last blood test, Diego told me that he had received a call from ADOS saying that he may possibly be a match for a patient. My first reaction was to say: “Yeah, right! I suppose Adolfo called you, didn’t he?” I thought he was pulling my leg. Knowing how unlikely it was, we could never have imagined that Diego would be the chosen donor.
We were aware of the numbers: only 1 in 4,000 donors actually donate. But it happened. During his donation process, Diego was explaining to everyone that his girlfriend had already been a donor and a year and a half later there he was, in the same hospital bed that I had been in.
We know very little about our UNSTOPPABLES. We know that the transplant went well and at every “transplant anniversary” we read about we imagine that we are part of their recovery.
